Mysteries, Glitches, and Fun Things To Do

by Nicolas Daoust (ndaoust@writeme.com)

Can I make something clear? I am not the owner of DK64 Central. This text is totally mine, but I can't be give credit for what is or is not on the site. Only send me things that have something to do with this text. If you have something else to report, go in the staff section of the site to know who takes care of what.

This text is updated often, so if you come here occasionally, go check the history section at the end. All new things are reported there.

A few days ago, I have started a new game. The sole purpose of it is to try to get the fairy camera as Chunky, using a glitch mentioned below. I just finished Gloomy Galleon, and I only need to go through Fungi Forest before Tiny can learn to monkeyport. That way, she will be able to play her sax on the music pad on K.Rool's island, and that will make the Hunky Chunky Barrel appear. Just wait a little more...

This is the table of contents.

1- Introduction
2- Mysteries
3- Bugs and Glitches
4- Fun Things
5- Conclusion
6- Credits, History, and all those formal things

INTRODUCTION

Well, I have a topic in a DK 64 forum that first was about a single mystery, then lots of them; then, I added two glitches...

I was suggested to make a web site from that information. Unfortunately, there isn't enough for that, but it can at least be put on a page of a web site, like it is here.

Post comments there, or e-mail them to me.

MYSTERIES

There are a few things in the game that are just so annoying! Here's a list of the most important mysteries, and how to see them.

1- Creepy Castle - pillar
2- Angry Aztec - frog
3- Beginning - dolphin
4- Gloomy Galleon - Mermaid's window
5- Jungle Japes - DK Isles picture
6- Fungi Forest - barn's other door
7- DK Isles - door in Fungi Forest lobby
8- Hideout Helm - Kongs' faces
9- Crystal Caves - Big Kosha's room

1- In Creepy Castle, use bananaport #4 and climb up a little to go to the ballroom's door. Pound the Diddy switch, but go in the Tag Barrel and enter the castle as Tiny. Use the monkeyport in the ballroom, and then the one behind the barn to find yourself in front of the most mind-boggling thing ever seen in a videogame.

2- In Angry Aztec, use any Kong 'cept Donkey to enter the temple (in the first desert area) with bananaport #2 in front of it. Find the Mini-Monkey Barrel and look behind it to see the strange frog picture.

3- If you look around in DK's house you'll see a dolphin picture hangin' on the wall.

4- In Gloomy Galleon, go in the lighthouse area and swim down to find a coral castle with a Mini-Monkey Barrel in front of it. Shrink as Tiny to go inside and see the useless window.

5- In Jungle Japes, go to the right (in the main area) with Lanky and go up the hill only him can climb. Inside the caves is a picture of the DK Isles that's there for no particular reason. It opens to give a golden banana, but why DK Isles?

6- In Fungi Forest, use bananaport #1 to get to the mill area. Somewhere around is a big barn without a door. You can go inside from a window at night with Diddy. On the other side, there's a window at the same height, but there's no way to get to it. Well, you can jump on the roof, but it took me about one hour to do it. The other side doesn't lead to anything. It's like if a cube had been cut off the barn.

7- In the Fungi Forest lobby in DK Isles, there are three doors: one that you open with a feather, one that you open with a mushroom, and one that you can't open...

8- In Hideout Helm, there are the five Kongs' pictures in K.Rool's room.

9- In Crystal Caves, after destroying an igloo as Chunky, you can monkeyport and kill the giant Kosha that caused the earthquakes. Under him is another DK dirt patche. Is that really the only point of this room?

The most annoying of these mysteries is the pillar. Why has Rare given itself the trouble to put a pillar in a room, along with a monkeyport? I sure hope we'll find out someday...

BUGS AND GLITCHES

The game got out not too long ago, but some people have already found some interesting glitches. Here are most of them.
  • After you have the 40 blueprints, go play Searchlight Seek at Snide's HQ. Sometimes, when you lose, the game freezes.
  • Charge up the B move. You can bananaport and still have it charged.
  • As Mini Monkey or Hulky Chunky, grab a vine. You will return to your normal size. As soon as you let go of the vine, you regain the small/big size. Up to date, there is only one place where you can do it as Tiny. In DK Isles, as Mini Monkey, use bananaport #2 to warp in front of the entrance to Angry Aztec. Go toward the two rocks, go past them, and jump down. Try to land on the tree, or at least on its platform. Climb the tree, and continue to climb. Use a somersault to grab a vine. The easiest way to do it as Chunky is to climb K.Rool's ship as Hulky Chunky. Grab one of the vines leading to Snide's HQ.
  • In Gloomy Galleon's lobby, find the pink and the blue Wrinkly doors. They are very close to each other. Go between them, and towards one of them. Be sure you've saved your game. When Wrinkly comes out, start tapping B like mad. If done right, she will not speak, and you'll be able to walk again while she returns in the door. Immediately go to the other one. Wrinkly will come out, but won't say anything, and the game is freezed. This can be done wherever there are Wrinkly doors that are close to each other.
  • In Crystal Caves, go to the cave opposite to Cranky's Lab, where Chunky had punched the ice. Inside is a big boulder that only Hulky Chunky can grab. Get big, power up the B move, and go towards the boulder. When you're close enough, Chunky will throw it up. Release B when it is the highest possible. Chunky will belch, and the rock will crash down. When the move is finished, though, Chunky will hold his arms like he's holding the boulder. You can drop it down or throw it. If you try to go away with nothing, the game will freeze.
  • Go to any place where there are slopes you can only cimb with the Orangstand. Get your shooter out, run up the slope, and when you start sliding, jump and press B. Instead of shooting, you will do the normal A + B move. If you continue pressing buttons fast, you can do other attacks. You can even Orangstand as Lanky if you are lucky. He walks on his hands while holding his pipe.
  • In Fungi Forest, as Chunky, at night, go in the area with the mad tomatoes. Jump in the Hunky Chunky Barrel, and go right, hugging the wall. There should be a small, green opening where once was a Troff n' Scoff portal. Hold the Control Stick so that you go in that little cave. When you reach the end, do a somersault. Gasp in awe (facultative) as you see Chunky go through the top of the opening. You're outside of the world, in a strange blue void. It shouldn't be too difficult to get the camera there too. Wander there as long as you want, but three things can happen:
    1. If you hug the wall from the outside, you can reach other parts of the world. It takes a lot of patience, though. I managed to get to the central area while staying in the wall, but not much farther.
    2. There will be the same effect as when you enter a door, and you'll restart at the beginning of the world. This can happen with every glitch that lets you go out of the boundaries.
    3. You will appear in the area with the mill and barns, and you'll still be big.
  • In Gloomy Galleon, go to the room with the TNT guys, the cannons, and Cranky's Lab. As Tiny, go to the place where once was a Troff n' Scoff door. Stand a few milimeters away from the wall, and somersault towards the brightest place of the wall. If you're lucky, you'll go through it, and find yourself in a strange orange void. Go to your right and try staying in the wall. Hover over the tunnel you'll come to. Then, continue, still staying in the wall. With some practice, you'll be able to reach the place where K.Rool's ship came from. Totally useless, but fun.
  • In Jungle Japes, go to the place with the bananaport #5, where are also the Mini-Monkey and Hulky Chunky Barrels. Get big as Chunky, and go just to the right of the little hole of the big snail shell. Jump towards it, not too high. It shouldn't take too many tries before you go through it, and either stay inside it or fall in another place in the level. If you're in it, press C-Up to see a little path. Go towards the little hole, and you should enter Tiny's place as Chunky. Inside, you can pound the Tiny switches to open the other doors, even if you are Chunky. Unfortunately, Chunky is too big to get out. If you fell down, you'll be in the middle tunnel that links most parts of the level. You can go around in the level as Hulky Chunky until you return to the place with bananaport #5. When you grab on vines, you're small, but when you jump, you're big again. You might even get outside the boundaries.
    01/19/00
  • In Angry Aztec, as Tiny, go to the place where Squawks takes you to the beetle race. Don't shrink, and play the sax on the music pad. When Squawks comes and leaves, press B to end the message. Quickly play the sax two other times. Leave the music pad. After a few seconds, Squawks will come, and say you're too heavy even though there's nothing on the pad! If you do all of that again, but go in the Mini-Monkey Barrel, Squawks will come, and Tiny will appear, grabbing Squawks's claws, even though you were elsewhere.
  • At any place where there's a music pad that became useless, play your instrument, and when the energy is released (flower for Tiny, star for Diddy, DK for the others), quickly press start. There are some missing things in the pause screens...
  • In DK Isles, become Hunky Chunky. Go to the Banana Fairy's island, and swim around it, close to its shore. You'll notice that Chunky can't get on it by swimming. Mess around enough, and you'll soon find yourself in the water, inside the island. Get on the ledge known as the small entrance, and try to get out. Instead, you'll enter the Fairy's place as Chunky, just like in the snail shell glitch. It is not known yet if it is possible to get the camera or the 201th banana as Chunky.
    01/29/00
  • When you do the Hunky Chunky Jungle Japes Snail Shell glitch above, and when you've fallen down in a tunnel, use Z and C-left to become small again. Go back to the place with the snail shell, and jump towards one of the big trees, which you can now climb. Don't enter anything or use bananaports, or the effect will wear off.
  • You can do the Hunky Chunky Grab Nothing Instead Of Boulder glitch anywhere at any size. In Creepy Castle's Museum, do the glitch, and then walk away slowly with the nothing. If you do it right, the boulder will reappear in your hands, and you won't be able to go away with it. Throw it anywhere, and it will come back elsewhere. Have fun!
  • Go into DK's cabin near bananaport #2 in Crystal Caves. If you kid enough with the switches, you might go through the floor.
  • Power up the B move. Go on a Battle Pad, press Z, and release B before you teleport to the Battle Arena. Now, isn't that spooky?
    01/31/00
  • It is possible to go through DK Isles. Inside, a strange room with computers can be found. It is actually the cockpit of K.Rool's ship. Why is it there? Rare couldn't put that room anywhere, and putting it in a separate section would have taken too much memory. So they thought of the big, empty space inside DK Isles. They only had to put the polygons there, and film K.Rool's departure. That is the sole purpose of the room. Knowing that, we can deduce that the place with the ship itself is somewhere out of the boundaries, probably inside K.Rool's Island. Here's how to get inside the control room precisely:
    1. Go into the Hunky Chunky Barrel.
    2. Swim to DK Isles.
    3. FInd the ledge where the tree leading to Angry Aztec was.
    4. Jump on the ledge right under it, and jump not too high, trying to grab the ledge where was the tree.
    5. You should be inside DK Isles. Run to the place where the fall is. Chunky should act like swimming.
    6. Staying inside, swim to the surface.
    7. Search around to eventually find the room with the computers.

FUN THINGS

These are fun things to do when you're bored playing DK64.
  • In Mystery, beat each boss once again.
  • Finish King Krusha K.Rool in more than 12 rounds and see what happens. I won't tell you!
  • Learn the DK Rap by heart.
  • In Mystery, try to have scores as high as possible in the mini-games.
  • Go to Snide's HQ, and try to beat Beaver Bother three times in a row. Tell me if you're still sane after that.
  • In Mystery, put everything at unlimited, and have fun with Diddy's Jetbarrel.
  • Return to the Minecart Challenges, the Beetle Races, and the races against the slot car, and try to get the maximum amount of coins. Easy against the slot car, difficult in the minecart levels, almost impossible against the beetle.
  • Find the 3500 bananas.
  • Try every single glitch written above.
  • Start a new game.
  • Clear all the DK dirt patches to see if it does something.
  • The spider you beat at night as Tiny comes back when you leave her area.
  • When you run or walk over banana peels (only found in the beginning), each Kong slips two different ways.
  • Go inside DK's house. There are plenty of things that can remind us of his past adventures...
  • Let a Kong stand still. Donkey will swallow a fly by accident, Diddy will play Haki with an orange, Lanky will juggle with 5 oranges, and lose them mysteriously, Tiny will do some acrobatics with an orange, and butterflies will land on Chunky, showing how scaring he is.
  • Watch the poor DK, who's forced to hold a barrel while you choose what to do. Here's what can happen:
    • Night will come
    • It will start raining
    • Beavers will start doing acrobatics behind DK
    • Kremlings will come and laugh at him
    • Kremlings will chase butterflies
    • A Kremling will wave his hands and feet behind DK
    • Rambi will chase beavers, then get chased by beavers
    • Rambi and beavers will roll on barrels
    • DK will shake his feet
    • Beavers will group around him, and will be scared off when Rambi runs around in the background.

CONCLUSION

There are surely plenty of things to add to this text. If you know of any, e-mail them to me at ndaoust@writeme.com
